Former minister of Education, Mallam Adamu Adamu, in a recent valedictory session with officials and heads of parastatals, disclosed that he did not know a lot about the Educational sector before he was appointed as the minister of Education under President Buhari.
After his appointment, he disclosed that he reached out to experienced individuals to guide him in his new job.
His words:
“I didn’t know anything about the education sector when I was appointed Minister except superficially. But when Buhari decided to make me Minister of Education, I called some people to assist me to work on a policy document on education because I was a novice in the sector. I shared my idea with them and they assisted me greatly, and I remain grateful to them for these years.
Mallam Adamu Adamu added that his appointment came as a shock to him.
“I was busy making recommendations and suggestions to the President on who to appoint into his cabinet in 2015. All of a sudden, he announced my name to my surprise and that was it. We worked together till 2019.
The former minister who served for 91 months ended his speech by thanking Buhari for allowing him to serve.

A lot of Nigerians have reacted to this confession. Questions about how they appoint ministers are being raised. What exactly are the criteria for appointing ministers? Is it by merit or by friendship? This is a major issue as Nigeria is in dire need of competent leaders. The role of ministers in any country can not be overemphasized. Ministers have to be appointed by merit and experience. Ministerial positions should not be given as consolations or rewards to individuals who sponsored your political campaigns.
